Makeup for Midlife Beauty: What’s In My Makeup Bag at 48

As a licensed professional for twenty years, I’ve done makeup applications on thousands of faces and skin types. What I quickly learned is that a specific makeup product on one face may not flatter another.

As a result, I’ve applied those skills to my personal makeup application. In recent years, my own face has become my most interesting project as the inevitable signs of aging emerge slowly but surely. Navigating makeup for midlife means throwing out the old rulebook.

My makeup bag has evolved. My approach has changed. And I want to share all of it with you. This is not a tutorial. Rather, it’s my personal edit at 48. Products that give off an effortless makeup for midlife vibe. And some of it might surprise you.

Makeup Bag Evolution Through my 20s & 30s

Back in 2008 when I turned 30 and genuinely thought I was old (ha!), my makeup bag told a very different story. MAC Studio Fix Powder Foundation, the holy grail. Glittery eyeshadow stacked on more glittery eyeshadow. Shimmery bronzer applied with enthusiasm because hello, I live in Florida. Everything was very shimmery. Everything was very much on trend for that time.

Then my mid to late thirties arrived and my rearview mirror gave me a reality check. Matte foundation was settling into creases I had not paid attention to before. Lines I did not want highlighted. It was first time makeup did flatter me.

The same formulas that had served me well were quietly working against me. My skin was sending a message. As a professional, I knew better than to ignore it.

Makeup that Doesn’t Work in Midlife

Heavy matte foundations and thick concealers were the first out the door. I needed formulas that would work with my skin, not just coat it. I moved toward CC creams at first, and then lighter, more hydrating foundations with buildable coverage because I wanted my skin to look like my skin, just better.

Shimmer eye shadow is very much welcome in my bag, just not glitter. Shimmer in midlife has a more specific job. When placed with intention: inner corner, center of the lid, a light touch on the brow bone, it accents my eyes in all the right ways. Speaking of shimmer, you couldn’t find a speck of it in my bronzer anymore. Matte bronzer ruled and reigned!

As for the heavy contouring trend that took over in 2016, I tried it, I really did. I moved towards powder contour instead, softened everything, and my face thanked me.

Inside My Makeup Bag

I know you’re curious to see what’s currently in my makeup bag. Every product I mention is one I truly love, so let’s get into it!

The Base and Skin Prep

• PEAUAMIE Hyaluronic Acid Under Eye Patches: takes care of tired eyes. Great to place under the eye while doing your eye makeup & catches any fallout.

Eyes & Brows

• Urban Decay Anti-Aging Eyeshadow Primer-Nude: Great eyeshadow primer that is crease resistant, long-lasting, and smooths the eyelid base to prep for eyeshadow.
• Natasha Denona Eye Sculpt Texture and Tone Palette in Soft / Makeup by Mario Ethereal Eye Shadow Palette: The Moonlight. Both eye shadow palettes have exactly what I want at this stage: mattes for the base and blend, satins and shimmers for the accent. These formulas are kind. They do not settle into the lid or look heavy by midday.
• YBF Universal Taupe Retractable Brow Pencil is perfect for filling in my microbladed brows.
• Got2B Glued 2 in 1 Brow Gel and Edge Control keeps everything set in place.

Foundation

• Lawless Beauty Forget the Filter Skin Plumping Line Smoothing Foundation (my current favorite) is my everyday foundation. Hydrating, skin-like medium coverage that does not feel like you are wearing anything.
• Estee Lauder Double Wear Stay-in-Place Longwear Matte Foundation: Great for days I want medium to full coverage. It’s buildable, lightweight, and the best part is it has a natural matte finish.

Under Eye Brightener and Concealer

• Morphe Wake Up Artist Under Eye Correcting Concealer: Lightweight, genuinely brightening, and a little goes a long way. I apply a small dot in the darkest area, blend it out, then layer concealer in my natural shade over it. The order matters.
• L’Oreal Infallible Full Coverage Concealer: Just a small amount will give you great coverage.

Blush and Color

• Morphe Cheek Thrills Multifinish Face Trio: These blush palettes offer cream and powder blush options that work beautifully together. Cream blush is a powerful way to add color to cheeks that is flattering to midlife skin. You can apply powder blush for an added pop of color to make the color last longer.
• Huda Beauty Blush Filter Palette in Baby Pink: I love this palette as it provides various shades and textures of blush. Forgiving on midlife skin!

Soft Contour and Bronzer

• Makeup Forever HD Skin Face Essentials Palette (my honorable mention): A multi-use cream palette that offers blush, foundation and soft contouring options (when using some darker foundation shades).
• Elf Cosmetics Halo Glow Contour Beauty Wand in Medium/Tan is hydrating, easy to apply, and blends beautifully.
• NARS Matte Bronzer in Laguna Beach: This is forever one of my favorite powder bronzers. I love to use this to set my contouring.

Lips

• Maybelline Serum Lipstick (My current favorite): I still love color on my lips. These lipsticks are hydrating with up to eight hours of lip plumping moisture with Hyaluronic Acid and Oil blend. They are available in matte and satin finishes. The color payoff is real.

Finishing and Setting Powders

• Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Flawless Finish Setting Powder: A great finishing powder to set areas of the face that may look a little shiny after foundation.
• One/Size by Patrick Starrr Ultimate Blurring Setting Powder in Ultra Peach: this finely milled setting powder was gifted to me and I LOVE it. It’s great for all skin types. I set my undereyes with this and love the blurring effect.

Setting Sprays

• Charlotte Tilbury Air Brush Flawless Setting Spray can be layered between each step of your makeup to help keep everything long-wearing. This is a great setting spray that will help makeup last throughout the day.
• L’Oreal Infallible 3-Second Setting Spray is my budget-friendly favorite setting spray that works just as hard as the previous one I mentioned. Pro tip: this fast-drying setting spray has a slight mattifying effect and can be sprayed before applying foundation. Great for oily skin.

Skin Refresh Essential

• D’Alba First Serum Spray is great spray to use for freshening your makeup throughout the day. It gives a beautiful glow to the skin and works wonderfully as a light prep step to hydrate before makeup application. Also, if you feel your makeup looks too matte, spray this and it will give your skin a nice natural glow. (You may have seen this one featured in my Glass Skin After 40 post. It earns its place in both routines.)

Makeup Brushes

• BK Beauty Makeup Brushes: Their brushes are wonderful! I highly recommend them as a worthy investment to take your midlife makeup to the next level. This trio brush set is perfect for foundation, cream blushes and contour, and under eye makeup. They’re soft, designed to blend beautifully, and angled for the natural contours of the face.
• Maange Makeup Brush Set: This is a great budget-friendly synthetic brush set that serves as a dupe for the popular Hourglass makeup brushes. They are great quality soft makeup brushes. Perfect for travel!

Hydration is Key in Midlife Beauty

“In your twenties, makeup is about expression. In your midlife, makeup is a partnership with your skincare. If you don’t prep the canvas with hydration, even the most expensive foundation will fall flat.”

Hydrating foundations with skin care ingredients. Bronzing balms that do not dry out mid-day. Cream blushes that melt into the skin. A hydrating serum spray to keep things dewy in the right places. A blurring fine-milled powder only where things get shiny. The goal is skin that looks alive, not skin that looks covered.

This shift happened gradually and then all at once. As my skin changed through my late 30s and into my 40s, with the dryness and subtle texture shifts that come with hormonal changes, I kept reaching for products that felt like skin care as much as makeup.

It turns out the cosmetic industry has been catching up to exactly that need. Formulas for foundations, concealers, and even contour products are now more forgiving and flattering for midlife beauty. The gap between skin care and makeup is closing, and for those of us in this season of life, the timing could not be better.
